Exhibit A, the Torana TT36.
Now compare that to Exhibit B, the original ATS.
The way the hood creases, the headlight lines and grille proportions, the list just keeps going on.
Backstory is fairly similar as well, just separated by 10 years. Both were envisioned as 3-series competitor, a compact sized RWD sedan. TT36 stemmed from the Zeta being too big and heavy. Same thing for Cadillac, Sigma was aging and too heavy. So platform-wise it was a ground up design, which seems to have laid the ground work for Alpha, the platform for the ATS. Cadillac just picked up where Holden left off.
Difference here though, is that the TT36 was a liftback. Funny enough if Cadillac was bold enough to keep bodystyle , it would’ve became a 4-series Gran Coupe / A5 Sportback competitor AND would’ve solved the complaints that the ATS has cramped seats. They would’ve also beat both the 4GC and A5S to the market with a compact luxury liftback, ATS’ fate would’ve been very different.
I guess the boneheaded execs and focus groups went on with the usual “people don’t buy hatchbacks, especially not luxury ones” thing, and it would’ve get killed off by the ATS’ subpar interior anyways.
I totally would’ve bought this, just theme and design it with the theme of an Escala.

Having daily driven an Alpha-chassis Camaro for a while now, this Holden design would represent 3 improvements:
1. Actual usable 2nd row (and 4 doors)
2. Liftback(!)
3. Windows
The Camaro’s back seats are smol and have no headroom. The trunk has tons of space, and a folding rear seatback, but a tiny opening. The C-pillars are massive too, and while I don’t mind that, the Camaro is selling very poorly because most people find the sight lines too jarring to give the car a chance.
Why Chevy hasn’t done a Gran Coupe competitior is beyond me. Everyone and their mother seems to be buying 4 GCs and Audi A5/S5/RS5 liftbacks. I’d have picked a Gran Camaro in a heartbeat if it were an option.

Two dead cars sitting on a wall...now if one dead car should accidentally fall... there'd be one dead car...sitting on a wall.

YOU RANG??!??!?
I don’t think there’s any connection to the ATS, but it’s a twin of the Regal!

Why not rebadge the Malibu Maxx ?

Or it’s ancestor, the Vectra C !
Not sure if it’s looking more like the pre-facelift or the facelift :

Looks like a Holden Commodore/Caprice with an A5 back end/tail lights and a lift back . I like it!

Styling wise yes it would be similar to the Vectra C, but it is RWD after all.

Well it’s moot point nowadays, all of them are focusing on crossovers. Sooner or later we’ll just have to settle with those with lowering kits.

The whole thing about Americans hating on liftbacks kills me.
Good to see some TT36 concept :) Love that thing
